The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed as fake a purported special announcement concerning governorship candidates in Zamfara, Gombe, Delta, Plateau, Yobe, and Kano states ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to reports by Vanguard News, the commission issued a notice warning Nigerians against circulating or relying on the publication, stressing that it did not originate from the electoral body.
Official Warning and Channels
“The Commission wishes to categorically inform the general public that the publication is FAKE and did not originate from INEC,” the notice stated. INEC urged citizens to verify all election-related information exclusively through its recognized communication channels to avoid being misled by false reports.
The electoral body reiterated its official communication platforms:
- Official Website: inecnigeria.org
- News Portal: inecnews.com
- Verified Social Media: @inecnigeria on X and Instagram, and INEC Nigeria on Facebook
Context of the Warning
The warning follows INEC’s publication of final candidate lists for the upcoming governorship elections scheduled for February 6, 2027. Following that release, reports emerged noting the absence of certain expected candidates—such as Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates Ladi Adebutu in Ogun State and Isa Pantami in Gombe State—from the official documents, which did not provide reasons for the omissions.
As preparations for the 2027 elections continue, INEC has appealed to the public to rely solely on official channels for verified updates regarding candidates and electoral activities.
