Dramatic Outburst at the Shanghai Masters

According to single-source reporting by The Telegraph, tennis player Alexander Bublik experienced a dramatic meltdown during his third-round match against Brandon Nakashima at the Rolex Shanghai Masters, only to rally and secure a victory.

After failing to capitalize on two set points, Bublik lost the first-set tie-break 9-7. Following a backhand winner down the line from Nakashima, Bublik’s frustration boiled over. He directed angry comments at his team before smashing his racket into the ground five times, completely crushing it.

As he walked toward his chair for the changeover, Bublik kicked the destroyed equipment and struck his hand through the lid of a drinks cooler, sustaining a self-inflicted injury. Chair umpire John Blom issued a code violation warning for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Medical Time-Out and Epic Comeback

With his hand bleeding, Bublik covered the wound with a towel and informed the umpire that he required a physiotherapist. He subsequently took a three-minute medical time-out to treat the injury.

Regaining his composure after the treatment, Bublik held serve at the start of the second set and ultimately fought back to win the match 6-7, 6-3, 7-6, marking his 30th win of the season.

A History of On-Court Controversies

The incident in Shanghai is the latest in a long history of outbursts and controversial remarks from the Kazakh player. Bublik stated in 2020 that he “hated tennis with all my heart” and played solely for financial benefits, a sentiment he has repeated throughout his career.

His past incidents include receiving a code violation at the 2023 US Open after smashing a racket during a match against Dominic Thiem. In 2025, he drew criticism for calling the retirement ceremonies of tennis legends Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray a “disgrace” and a “circus.” Earlier this year, he also made disparaging remarks about Arthur Rinderknech’s nationality and appearance following a three-set victory.
