CROSS RIVER STATE — The Office of the Deputy Governor of Cross River State has dismissed viral reports claiming that Deputy Governor Peter Odey was involved in an automobile accident.
In a statement, the office clarified that the Deputy Governor was not involved in any crash, explaining that the incident involved only one vehicle in his convoy.
The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday, August 9, 2026, while the convoy was returning from Northern Cross River, where Odey had represented Governor Bassey Otu at a stakeholder engagement on the concession of the Obudu Ranch Resort.
According to the statement, the driver of the Government House Press bus lost control of the vehicle while passing through Yakurr Local Government Area and crashed into the barricades at an Army checkpoint.
The government said no other vehicle was involved and no life was lost. Some occupants of the bus reportedly sustained minor injuries and were immediately evacuated for medical attention.
The affected staff members were said to be in stable condition and had since resumed work.
The Deputy Governor was not in the vehicle and reportedly continued his journey safely to Calabar.
The Deputy Governor’s office described the viral report as inaccurate and urged members of the public to disregard what it called exaggerated claims.
It also advised the media and the public to rely on official communications from the Cross River State Government for verified information.
