A surge of violent ambushes and raids across Zamfara State has left dozens of civilians and security personnel dead over the past week, according to single-source reporting published by Daily Trust. The deadly incidents spanned several local government areas, including Bukkuyum, Maru, Gusau, and Bungudu, underscoring ongoing instability despite heightened military operations.

Deadly Ambush on Market Travellers in Bukkuyum

The latest major assault occurred on Sunday in Bukkuyum Local Government Area, where armed bandits ambushed a group of traders travelling from Gwashi district to the Gurusu market. According to a local resident, at least 20 people were killed in the confrontation, comprising 12 civilians and eight security operatives—specifically five soldiers, two mobile police officers, and an operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). Several other people sustained injuries.

Discrepancies emerged regarding the casualty count among local residents, with a separate account putting the number of slain security personnel at nine. The deadly encounter disrupted trade at the Gurusu market, prompting local calls for authorities to provide better-protected equipment. One resident questioned why security forces confronting well-armed assailants were still operating in open pickup vehicles rather than bulletproof platforms along the Anka-Bukkuyum corridor.

Traders Targeted Along Dansadau Road

The violence followed another ambush on Saturday targeting traders heading toward Dansadau in Maru Local Government Area. Assailants attacked a convoy on an unfinished section of the road and set approximately 12 vehicles ablaze. The attack came shortly after soldiers had cleared explosive hazards along the corridor, which had led travellers to assume the route was secure.

The incident compounded hardships along the corridor, where hundreds of commuters had previously been stranded at Magamin Maitarko for more than a week. A local trader, Muhammad Salisu Dansadau, described extensive economic losses, noting that prolonged transit delays destroyed truckloads of perishable produce, including tomatoes and peppers, and led to the loss of livestock.

Vigilantes Slain Outside Gusau and Assault on Mining Outpost

Also on Saturday, four people were killed in Damba district on the outskirts of Gusau when armed bandits ambushed members of a local vigilante group known as Askarawa in Kaikaice village. Three vigilantes and one other individual died, while another survivor sustained gunshot wounds. Residents suspected informants had tipped off the attackers following a rice harvesting trip by the group the previous day.

Earlier in the week, an assault occurred in Bindin village within Bungudu Local Government Area. A local resident reported that nine soldiers and three mobile policemen were killed after an armed faction, allegedly led by bandit commander Gwaska Dankarami, attacked a local gold mining site and an adjacent military camp. The resident stated the attack was a reprisal after miners resisted an attempt by the group to enforce control at the site. Fleeing workers took cover in Bindin village as gunmen pursued them, leaving an unconfirmed number of civilian casualties inside mining pits and surrounding bushland.

Military Countermeasures and Official Response

Amid the escalation, troops operating under Operation Fansan Yamma have continued offensive measures, which recently included the activation of three new infantry battalions in Zamfara State. In Maru Local Government Area, military personnel detected and neutralized two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) discovered along the Magami-Hannutara-Dansadau road following intelligence reports.

Zamfara State Police Command spokesperson DSP Yazid Abubakar and the Acting Army Information Officer at the Joint Task Force North-West Headquarters, Lt. Col. Aliyu Danja, could not be reached for official comment on the casualty figures at the time of publication.

Addressing security matters during an anniversary briefing, the Secretary to the State Government, Malam Abubakar Nakwada, reiterated that state authorities remain committed to supporting security agencies and the newly established Community Protection Guards (CPG) with operational logistics, surveillance equipment, and vehicles to counter ongoing rural threats.
