According to reports by Yahoo Finance, pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly has released trial results showing that a combination treatment of tirzepatide—the active ingredient in Zepbound—and an experimental drug called eloralintide produced significantly greater weight loss than standalone treatments.

Promising Weight Loss Results Over 48 Weeks

After a 48-week trial period, patients taking the combination of tirzepatide and eloralintide lost up to 23.3% of their body weight. In comparison, patients taking tirzepatide alone achieved 14.8% weight loss, while those taking only eloralintide lost up to 12.3%. Eloralintide is an experimental drug that targets amylin, a natural hormone, rather than GLP-1.

The Challenge of High Discontinuation Rates

Despite the strong efficacy results, the trial highlighted a notable hurdle: patient tolerance. The discontinuation rate for the combination treatment reached as high as 27% due to side effects, indicating that the regimen was not well-tolerated by all participants.

However, Ken Custer, President of Lilly Cardiometabolic Health, noted that high discontinuation rates were also common for tirzepatide during its mid-stage trials several years ago, suggesting that dosage adjustments could help address the issue.

Implications for Eli Lilly Stock

The trial results reflect a net positive for Eli Lilly, demonstrating the company’s continuous drive to innovate and maintain its leadership in the anti-obesity market. Nevertheless, investors face considerations regarding the stock’s valuation. With a market capitalization exceeding $1 trillion and trading at roughly 40 times trailing earnings, the stock’s valuation remains steep, pointing to potentially modest near-term gains despite solid long-term prospects.
