The Federal Government has inspected the ongoing assembly of 10,000 electric vehicles in Maiduguri, Borno State, under the management of the North-East Development Commission (NEDC).
The vehicles, comprising buses, tricycles and taxis, are expected to be distributed across the six North-East states alongside charging infrastructure.
Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh, said he was impressed with the progress of the project, noting that it is expected to create jobs for youths and improve transportation and the movement of agricultural produce across the region.
According to the minister, the assembly process alone could provide employment for up to 100,000 people before the 10,000-vehicle target is completed.
He also urged the NEDC to ensure that rural communities along newly constructed road corridors benefit from the distribution of the electric vehicles.
