Championship Stakes Confirmed for Heavyweight Showdown
The highly anticipated heavyweight clash between British rivals Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua will carry significant championship weight. Promoter Frank Warren has confirmed that the WBA ‘super’ heavyweight world title will be on the line when the two fighters meet at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on December 11.
The inclusion of the WBA title comes as a notable development, as the organization currently recognizes Murat Gassiev as its ‘regular’ titlist. Gassiev had been widely expected to be elevated to full champion status following the decision by Oleksandr Usyk to vacate his belts. Both Fury and Joshua previously held world titles before losing them to Usyk, and the upcoming bout offers both men a path to reclaim championship status.
Future Unification Plans
Speaking to Sky Sports News, Warren emphasized the importance of the fight in the broader landscape of the heavyweight division. “Whoever wins that, they’ve got a version of the belt and the objective, after Usyk vacated all the belts, is to find out who’s the best, who’s going to hold all the belts, who’s going to be the No 1 heavyweight,” Warren stated.
Looking ahead to 2027, Warren expressed his intention to organize further unification bouts. The promoter is currently focused on the upcoming WBO heavyweight title rematch between Daniel Dubois and Fabio Wardley. Warren noted that he hopes to see the winner of the Fury-Joshua fight face the winner of the Dubois-Wardley contest in the future.
Daniel Dubois, currently holding the WBO title, expressed his readiness to face either Fury or Joshua, stating, “I’ll gladly take on the winner of that. I will stake my claim and take on the world, the belts and everything else that comes along with it.”
