A Decorated Career Comes to an End

Georgia Tech linebacker Kyle Efford, a two-time all-ACC selection and two-year team captain, announced on Tuesday that he is medically retiring from college football. The Dacula, Georgia native, who recently earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration, cited an accumulation of injuries as the reason for his decision to step away from the sport.

Impact on the Yellow Jackets

Efford leaves behind a significant legacy at Georgia Tech, having recorded 250 career tackles. Between 2023 and 2025, he became the first Yellow Jacket in 24 years to lead the team in tackles for three consecutive seasons. His impact was immediate; in 2023, he became the first freshman to lead the team in tackles since 2000.

Despite being limited to 169 defensive snaps across three games during the 2026 season, Efford remained a productive force, averaging 9.0 tackles per contest. His final performance included a key stop in a 28-25 victory over No. 23 Duke last Saturday, a win that contributed to Georgia Tech’s 6-1 record against ranked ACC opponents during his tenure.

Transition to New Role

While his playing career has concluded, Efford will remain with the Georgia Tech football program for the remainder of the 2026 season. According to the university, he will continue to serve as a team captain and will transition into a player-coach role to support his teammates.

Efford’s career was marked by his consistency and leadership, helping the Yellow Jackets secure three consecutive bowl berths and three straight top-four finishes in the ACC standings.
