According to reporting by Vanguard News, Abia State Governor Alex Otti has cautioned residents against accepting financial and material inducements from politicians, warning that short-term gifts could compromise the state’s progress ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Governor Otti delivered the warning on Sunday during the 2nd Session of the 7th Synod of the Anglican Communion, Diocese of Aba Ngwa North, held at All Saints Anglican Cathedral in Abayi-Umuocham, Aba. The governor was represented at the event by his Chief of Staff, Dr. Caleb Ajagba.

Warning Against Short-Term Inducements

Addressing the congregation, Ajagba urged citizens to prioritize long-term state development over temporary material benefits offered during election seasons. He alleged that politicians responsible for Abia’s past governance challenges over a 24-year period were seeking to regain public support.

“Don’t use the ₦5,000, the ₦10,000, the wrapper or the rice they will give you and close the destiny of Abians for the next four years, because even prayer and fasting will not open it,” Otti stated through his representative, cautioning voters against enabling politicians to derail ongoing state progress.

The governor also warned Christians to remain discerning, noting that political figures who had previously ignored the church and failed to answer phone calls were suddenly attending services and returning missed calls as election season approaches.

Foundation and Consolidation

Reflecting on his tenure, Otti noted that the first three years of his administration were largely dedicated to laying a foundation for growth following decades of neglected infrastructure and governance issues. He added that the subsequent four years, beginning in 2027, would focus on consolidation and visible state transformation.

Addressing church administration, the governor promised state support toward completing cathedral development projects, while reiterating his position that public funds must primarily be deployed for broader state development rather than directly funding religious projects.

Synod Theme Emphasizes Critical Thinking

Otti commended the synod’s theme, “Don’t Just Absorb It; Think It Through,” derived from Acts 17:11–12, describing it as particularly relevant as Nigeria enters another political cycle. He urged citizens to examine political claims critically before forming conclusions.

The Bishop of Aba Ngwa North Diocese, Dr. Nathan Kanu, commended the governor’s support for the church and presented gifts to his representative. Meanwhile, the guest speaker, Rt. Rev. Chidi Oparajiaku, Bishop of Ohaji/Egbema Diocese, preached on “The Bereans Wisdom,” encouraging believers to evaluate messages carefully rather than acting on impulse or falling victim to deception.

The event drew several notable attendees, including the Labour Party National Vice-Chairman for the South-East, Hon. Ishmael Onuoha; Abia State LP Chairman, Sir Peter Azubuike; Osisioma Local Government Area Mayor, Hon. Chidi Agu; Special Assistant to the Governor on Special Duties, Dr. George Chiedozie; Special Adviser on Labour Matters, Godson Anucha; and Aba industrialist Bob Udeagha.
