According to reports by the New York Post, New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal took a crucial step toward returning to the lineup on Thursday morning by skating for the first time since aggravating his surgically repaired left kneecap.
Barzal missed all of training camp and the opening week of the regular season. While an exact timeline for his return remains undetermined, team leadership has expressed optimism regarding his recovery path. The next phases for Barzal will involve returning to team practices and eventually being exposed to contact.
Islanders Optimistic About Recovery Timeline
General manager Mathieu Darche noted last week that Barzal does not require an extended ramp-up period to get game-ready. “Mat Barzal’s not a guy that needs three weeks to get ready,” Darche said. “When I played, with my poor skating, I needed more time. A guy like Barzal, you give him a few practices, and he’s good to go.”
Barzal’s left kneecap will likely continue to require careful management upon his return. He previously managed the issue throughout the previous year before aggravating it ahead of the World Championships in May, which forced him to withdraw from the tournament. Although he resumed skating over the summer, inflammation reemerged just prior to training camp.
Lineup Adjustments and Bo Horvat Evaluation
The Islanders have sorely missed Barzal’s creative spark and offensive dynamism during the early stretch of the season. When he returns, head coach Pete DeBoer will face a strategic lineup decision, given that Cal Ritchie has filled in capably as the second-line center—the position initially designated for Barzal. Teammate Matthew Schaefer highlighted the team’s anticipation for Barzal’s comeback, noting, “To see him skating, it’s awesome.”
Meanwhile, the Islanders are monitoring the health of captain Bo Horvat. Horvat absorbed a late, high hit to the head from Chicago’s Frank Nazar following an empty-net goal late in the game. Coach DeBoer stated after the match that Horvat was being evaluated, presumably for a concussion, adding further injury concerns for the club.
