Islanders Optimistic on Barzal’s Recovery

The New York Islanders may soon receive a significant boost to their forward group. Head coach Peter DeBoer confirmed to media, including Stefen Rosner of The Elmonters, that the team is optimistic about the recovery of star forward Mathew Barzal. The 29-year-old has been sidelined to start the season due to a knee injury but has recently resumed skating.

Potential Return Timeline

While the Islanders are scheduled to host the Vancouver Canucks tomorrow, team officials suggested that a return for that specific contest may be premature. However, the club’s subsequent matchup against the Ottawa Senators this Thursday remains a possibility if Barzal continues to progress in his rehabilitation without setbacks.

Impact on Lineup Depth

Barzal, who secured the Calder Trophy in the 2017-18 season, remains a cornerstone of the Islanders’ offense. Last season, he led the team in scoring with 19 goals and 72 points across 81 games, standing as the only player on the roster to surpass the 60-point threshold. Upon his return, the coaching staff faces a decision regarding his placement. With the team’s current center depth—bolstered by the presence of Bo Horvat—Barzal is expected to slot into the second line, potentially playing on the wing alongside either veteran Brayden Schenn or prospect Calum Ritchie.
