The Challenge of Returning to the Ice

New York Islanders center Mathew Barzal is currently working through a recovery process for his left knee, an injury that has kept him out of the lineup since the start of training camp. The injury stems from a kneecap issue suffered in February 2025. While Barzal recently returned to the ice for individual skating sessions, the team has not yet established a definitive timeline for his return to game action.

Teammates Empathize with the Recovery Process

The road to recovery is as much a mental battle as it is a physical one, according to those who have navigated similar paths. Islanders captain Bo Horvat, who is currently being evaluated following a concussion protocol, noted that the uncertainty of recovery timelines can be a significant source of frustration for athletes.

“I think a lot of it is mental,” Horvat told Newsday. “Obviously, there are some physical things. But to finally get out there and realize it’s going to be OK or, you know, it’s not, mentally, you don’t know until you’re in it.”

Building Trust After Injury

Former Islanders captain Anders Lee, who previously recovered from an ACL injury, emphasized that Barzal is making the right decision by prioritizing his long-term health. Lee noted that Barzal played through significant discomfort last season, producing 72 points despite the injury, but acknowledged that there comes a point where an athlete must ensure they are fully healed.

Kyle Palmieri, who also underwent an ACL recovery, highlighted the difficulty of replicating game-speed contact in a rehabilitation setting. “Things like battles and contact you can’t replicate in a weight room or summer skates,” Palmieri said. “It’s building trust. I don’t think you want to go into it thinking everything is going to just be completely normal… That process doesn’t end with the doctors clearing you.”

Current Team Status

The Islanders are currently managing multiple health concerns. In addition to Barzal’s ongoing recovery, the team is monitoring Horvat following an illegal check to the head from Chicago’s Frank Nazar during Thursday’s 4-1 victory. The NHL has since suspended Nazar for two games. With both players’ statuses uncertain, the team faces a challenging stretch as they prepare to host the Tampa Bay Lightning.
