According to reports by Vanguard News, the Air Component of the Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) has successfully neutralised over 40 Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists, including a prominent commander. The precision air strike targeted a terrorist enclave at Badu Village, situated south of Gudumbali in the Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State.
The military engagement took place on October 10, 2026. In addition to the casualties among the fighters—with scores more reportedly escaping with varying degrees of injuries—the strike destroyed two vehicles and approximately 20 motorcycles utilized by the group for mobility, logistics, and offensive operations.
Intelligence-Driven Operation
Details of the engagement were released in a press statement issued on Monday by Captain Mohammed Goni, the Acting Media Information Officer for the Headquarters Joint Task Force North East Operation HADIN KAI. Captain Goni stated that the operation was intelligence-driven, following credible reports indicating a concentration of ISWAP fighters preparing coordinated attacks against troops in the Sector 3 area of responsibility.
Acting on this intelligence, the Air Component conducted targeted aerial surveillance to identify terrorist movements around the suspected hideouts and logistics facilities before executing the precision strike on a building occupied by the insurgents.
Impact on Insurgent Capabilities
Preliminary human intelligence and Battle Damage Assessments confirmed that more than 40 terrorists, alongside a prominent ISWAP Qaid (commander), were eliminated. Further intelligence indicated that the targeted fighters belonged to ISWAP’s Murabitun element, a specialized mobile fighting unit tasked with carrying out patrols, coordinating assaults, and sustaining operations in the region.
Military authorities noted that the destruction of the enclave and logistical assets deals a severe blow to the group’s capacity to launch attacks in the Lake Chad basin, while further assessments continue to evaluate the full scope of the damage.
Reaffirming the military’s ongoing stance, Captain Goni emphasized that the successful operation highlights the efficacy of intelligence-led, coordinated air campaigns. The Joint Task Force remains committed to sustaining joint air and ground efforts to dismantle remaining terrorist networks and restore long-term stability to Nigeria’s northeast.
