The Plateau State Police Command has arrested three suspects, including a clergyman, a Nigerian Air Force sergeant and a Nigerian Navy personnel, over an alleged plot to abduct the wives of two prominent bishops in Jos, Plateau State.
The suspects were identified by the police as 42-year-old Rev. Hassan Yunisim Mijah, a resident of Tudun Wada in Jos North, Sergeant Ezra Sunday of the Nigerian Air Force, and OS Usman Khalid of the Nigerian Navy.
According to the police, the two military personnel are attached to Sector 1 of Operation Enduring Peace in Jos.
The Command alleged that the suspects were planning to kidnap the wives of Bishop Ephraim Gongden and retired Bishop Benjamin Kwashi, who reside in the Rantya area of Jos South Local Government Area.
The arrests followed intelligence received by the Plateau State Police Command concerning an alleged criminal conspiracy and a planned abduction, according to the authorities.
Acting on the intelligence, operatives of the Vigilance and Criminal Response Unit commenced an investigation and subsequently carried out an operation that resulted in the arrest of the three suspects.
The police further stated that the suspects allegedly confessed to the offence during interrogation.
Following the arrest of the two military personnel, the Command said Operation Enduring Peace was formally notified of their detention.
The Police Command has commenced further investigations to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged plot and determine whether other individuals were involved.
Authorities are also working to identify and apprehend any other members of the suspected criminal network who may have participated in the alleged conspiracy.
The development has once again highlighted the importance of intelligence-led policing and cooperation among security agencies in preventing kidnapping and other violent crimes in Plateau State.
The Police Command assured members of the public that investigations would continue and that anyone found to have participated in the alleged criminal activity would face the appropriate legal process.
