Senate Formalizes Legal Status of Kano Institution

The Nigerian Senate passed a bill on Tuesday to provide a comprehensive legal framework for the Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education in Kano State. The legislation, which aims to establish a statutory foundation for the institution’s management and administration, was passed during a plenary session presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Legislative Background and Sponsorship

The bill was sponsored by the Deputy Senate President, Barau I. Jibrin (APC, Kano North). According to reports by Daily Trust, the legislation underwent a full legislative process, including second and third readings, following its first reading on March 25, 2025. Senator Barau emphasized that the bill is essential for the promotion and development of teacher education and provides the necessary regulatory structure for the university’s operations.

Conversion and Renaming

The university’s current status is the result of a series of executive actions. In September 2024, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the conversion of the Federal College of Education in Kano into a federal university of education. Subsequently, on May 10, 2025, the President approved a request by Senator Barau to rename the institution in honor of the late Yusuf Maitama Sule.

During the debate, Senator Barau expressed gratitude to President Tinubu, noting that the administration has also approved other educational projects in the region, including the Federal University of Science and Technology in Kabo and a Federal Polytechnic in Rano. He recounted his previous efforts to upgrade the institution, noting that while similar bills were passed in the previous legislative assembly, they did not receive presidential assent at that time.

Next Steps

Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the swift passage of the bill and expressed optimism that President Tinubu would sign the legislation into law. Once assented to, the act will provide the university with the formal statutory backing required to fulfill its academic mandate and contribute to national development.
