Silence from 30 Rock
As public criticism intensifies regarding comedian Shane Gillis’ recent appearance on Saturday Night Live, both the show and its network, NBC, have remained notably absent from the conversation. The production has not issued a public statement nor responded to requests for comment, adhering to a long-standing strategy of remaining silent during controversies involving its hosts.
The Monologue and the Backlash
During his monologue, Gillis, who was previously fired from the show shortly after his initial hiring in 2019 due to past offensive remarks, characterized women wearing workout attire as looking like “whores.” The comments drew immediate condemnation from various corners of the entertainment industry and beyond.
For some within the SNL organization, the monologue raised internal concerns. Jessie Leo, a graphic designer for the show, expressed on Instagram that the segment made her feel uncomfortable regarding the workplace environment, citing concerns over “rape culture and victim-blaming.”
Industry Figures Respond
Several high-profile figures, including former SNL cast members, have publicly criticized the remarks. Cecily Strong, the show’s longest-tenured female cast member, posted a satirical response on her Instagram story, while Ego Nwodim also shared a post mocking the comedian’s characterization. Outside of the SNL orbit, actor Dan Levy released a video statement calling the comments misogynistic and urging men to speak out against such rhetoric.
Critics have also pointed to the timing of the monologue, noting that it occurred amid heightened public discourse surrounding sexual violence, including a high-profile investigation into an alleged gang rape at Cornell University.
A Familiar Pattern
The decision to remain silent is consistent with the show’s historical approach under executive producer Lorne Michaels. The program has previously declined to comment on controversies surrounding other hosts, such as Dave Chappelle, who has faced significant criticism for his remarks regarding the transgender community.
