Abuja, The Northern Senators Forum has condemned the recent killings in Benue and Kaduna states, describing the attacks as tragic and calling for intensified efforts to bring those responsible to justice.
In a statement issued by the Forum’s Chairman, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, the lawmakers also expressed support for the Federal Government’s plan to expand the Nigerian Army and recruit additional personnel to strengthen the country’s security response.
The forum noted that the planned expansion of the Army from eight to twelve divisions, alongside the recruitment of 28,000 additional military personnel, would improve military operations, strengthen border security, and enhance response to emerging security threats.
The statement followed separate attacks in the two states:
- In Benue State, gunmen reportedly attacked Efeyi Community in Otukpo Local Government Area, killing 13 people and injuring several others.
- In Kaduna State, suspected attackers invaded Naridon Village in Kauru Local Government Area, killing about 30 people, including women and children, while several homes were destroyed.
The senators urged the Federal Government to ensure the swift arrest and prosecution of those behind the attacks and provide adequate relief for victims and internally displaced persons.
They also called on residents to support security agencies by providing credible and timely intelligence that could help prevent future attacks.
According to the forum, lasting peace can only be achieved through coordinated security operations, improved intelligence gathering, and sustained investment in Nigeria’s security architecture.
