Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has responded to criticism surrounding the recently concluded Osun State governorship election, saying he stood by his family and supported his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, without relying on anyone.
Davido, who hails from Osun State, made the statement on Monday through his verified X account, following the victory of Governor Ademola Adeleke in Saturday’s governorship election.
The singer said he did not pay or mobilise anyone to support the election, stressing that he independently stood by his family.
“I brought no one. No one defended me. I backed my family on my own. I have done my job,” Davido wrote.
The singer also expressed his frustration with the Nigerian political system, describing politics in the country as “evil.”
“Nigerian politics is evil and I don’t want to be a part of it till God helps us,” he added.
Adeleke Wins Second Term
Governor Ademola Adeleke secured a second term after defeating the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, in the August 15 election.
According to results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Adeleke polled 511,067 votes, while Oyebamiji received 444,815 votes, giving the incumbent governor a winning margin of 66,252 votes.
Adeleke won in 19 local government areas across the state, including Osogbo, Ede North, Ede South, Ife Central, Ife North, Ife East, Ilesa West, Iwo, Ila, Ejigbo, Odo Otin, Oriade and several others.
Oyebamiji, a former Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning in Osun State, later conceded defeat following the announcement of the results.
Davido’s Role in the Campaign
Davido had openly supported his uncle throughout the election campaign, using his significant social media following to promote Adeleke’s re-election bid and encourage support for him.
However, his latest comments suggest that the singer is distancing himself from active partisan politics, saying he would only consider participating again if the political environment improves.
His remarks have since generated reactions online, particularly among Nigerians who have been debating the role of celebrities and public figures in politics.
