Governor Ademola Adeleke’s victory in the Osun State governorship election has continued to attract reactions, with political leaders, organisations and civil society groups congratulating him on his re-election.
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) and Yiaga Africa have all reacted to the outcome of the election.
HURIWA Commends Osun Voters
HURIWA commended voters in Osun State for participating in the election and defending their democratic mandate despite reports of violence and tension before the polls.
The organisation also praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies for the largely peaceful conduct of the election.
However, HURIWA called for investigations into reported cases of vote buying, voter inducement and election-related violence, urging authorities to prosecute anyone found responsible regardless of political affiliation.
The group congratulated Adeleke and urged him to see his re-election as a mandate to govern all residents of Osun State.
Yiaga Africa Says Results Matched Its Verification
Election observer group Yiaga Africa described the election as an example of how technology, citizen participation and institutional preparedness can contribute to electoral integrity.
The organisation said INEC’s announced results were consistent with its independent verification of ballots counted at polling units.
However, Yiaga Africa noted that this did not amount to an endorsement of the entire electoral process, particularly because of reports of vote buying and voter inducement.
APC Considers Legal Options
Meanwhile, the Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) said it was consulting its legal team over the outcome of the election.
The party said it was reviewing results from the 332 wards across the state and would explore available legal avenues if it identified irregularities.
The APC had lost the election to Adeleke, who secured 511,067 votes, compared with 444,815 votes recorded by APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji.
Makinde Congratulates Adeleke
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde also congratulated Adeleke, describing the outcome as a victory for democracy and the people of Osun State.
Makinde praised Adeleke for what he described as his commitment to governance and development, while also commending Osun voters for participating in the election despite the tension surrounding the polls.
He urged Adeleke to use his renewed mandate to deliver more development across the state.
NGF and ADC React
The Nigeria Governors’ Forum, through its Chairman and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, congratulated Adeleke and commended Osun voters for their participation.
The Forum said the strong interest generated by the off-cycle election demonstrated the resilience of Nigeria’s democracy.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) also congratulated Adeleke, describing his victory as not only a personal achievement but also a victory for the people of Osun State and opposition groups that worked together during the election.
With Adeleke now set to begin another four-year term, attention is expected to shift toward governance, reconciliation and the political implications of the Osun election ahead of the 2027 general elections.
