Nigeria is a nation blessed with remarkable diversity, where each geopolitical zone contributes uniquely to national development, political stability, and cultural richness. Among these six zones, North Central Nigeria occupies a unique and strategic position. Commonly referred to as the Middle Belt, the region serves as the geographical and symbolic bridge between Northern and Southern Nigeria. Yet, despite its immense contributions to nation-building, North Central has often remained underrepresented in national discourse and development priorities. It is therefore imperative that the region receives greater constitutional, political, and developmental recognition as a distinct and indispensable part of the Nigerian federation.
North Central Nigeria comprises Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau States, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Its central location makes it the nation’s crossroads, facilitating trade, transportation, governance, and social interaction among Nigerians from every region. This strategic position has enabled the zone to play a significant role in fostering national integration and peaceful coexistence.
One of the defining characteristics of North Central Nigeria is its extraordinary cultural and ethnic diversity. The region is home to hundreds of ethnic nationalities, each with its own rich traditions, languages, and cultural heritage. Unlike regions dominated by one or two major ethnic groups, North Central reflects the true multicultural nature of Nigeria. For decades, the people of the region have demonstrated that unity in diversity is not merely a national slogan but a practical reality.
Economically, North Central remains one of Nigeria’s greatest assets. The region is widely acknowledged as the nation’s agricultural hub, producing substantial quantities of yam, cassava, rice, maize, soybeans, sesame, fruits, vegetables, and livestock. Benue State rightly bears the title of the “Food Basket of the Nation,” while Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Nasarawa, and Kwara States contribute significantly to agricultural production, solid mineral development, hydroelectric power generation, and tourism. The vast arable land, abundant mineral resources, and enormous investment opportunities position North Central as a critical driver of Nigeria’s economic diversification and food security.
Politically, North Central has consistently demonstrated unwavering commitment to democracy, national unity, and peaceful coexistence. The region has produced distinguished public servants, legislators, military officers, technocrats, and political leaders who have served Nigeria with dedication and integrity. Nevertheless, many citizens believe that the region has not always received equitable representation in key federal appointments, infrastructure development, and resource allocation. Ensuring greater inclusion would strengthen national cohesion, promote equity, and reinforce every citizen’s confidence in the Nigerian project.
It is therefore encouraging that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made commendable efforts to include competent sons and daughters of North Central in strategic national positions. Such appointments deserve recognition as positive steps toward inclusive governance. Sustaining this commitment will further deepen national unity and inspire greater confidence among the people of the region.
A landmark achievement in this direction is the establishment of the North Central Development Commission (NCDC). The approval of the Commission represents a historic milestone and a significant demonstration of the Federal Government’s commitment to balanced regional development. The Commission provides a dedicated institutional framework to address infrastructure deficits, stimulate economic growth, promote peace and security, and coordinate development initiatives across the zone.
The people of North Central owe a debt of gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Assembly, and all stakeholders whose collective efforts made the establishment of the Commission possible. This bold initiative renews hope that the developmental aspirations of the region will receive the focused attention they deserve and that the enormous potential of North Central will be fully harnessed for the benefit of Nigeria.
The presence of the Federal Capital Territory within North Central further underscores the strategic importance of the region. As the seat of Nigeria’s government and the nation’s political headquarters, the FCT attracts people from every corner of the country. It is therefore both logical and necessary that the surrounding states receive corresponding investments in transportation, healthcare, education, agriculture, security, and industrial development to complement the growth of the nation’s capital.
Advocating greater recognition for North Central Nigeria is not a call for preferential treatment or regional rivalry. Rather, it is a principled appeal for fairness, equity, and balanced national development. A truly united Nigeria can only emerge when every geopolitical zone is accorded equal respect, equal opportunity, and equitable access to national resources and development initiatives.
As Nigeria continues its journey toward greater unity and prosperity, North Central stands as the nation’s bridge of peace, a melting pot of cultures, and a pillar of agricultural and economic strength. Recognizing its strategic importance through sustained political inclusion, constitutional consideration, and accelerated development will not only address longstanding concerns but also strengthen the bonds that unite our nation.
A stronger North Central will contribute to a stronger Nigeria. When every region is recognized, empowered, and given the opportunity to thrive, the entire nation benefits.
